Skydiving is an adrenaline-pumping, eye-opening, heart-racing adventure that isn’t just for thrill-seekers or “normies” – many celebrities have also taken the plunge from thousands of feet above the ground. From movie stars to musicians and athletes, these famous faces prove that the excitement and rush of jumping out of an airplane is craved by everyone!
Many famous people have jumped at least one time with a special few that have actually gone on to get their license to go solo. Here’s a list of some of the most impressive celebrities who have earned their skydiving license from the United States Parachute Association (USPA).
Orlando Bloom went skydiving as a part of a three-part adventure show, Orlando Bloom: To the Edge. Bloom jumped out of an airplane at 13,000 feet, flying over the Pacific Ocean before landing on the beach. He also wingsuited, which is very similar to skydiving but involves wearing a special suit designed to inflate – causing a skydiver to glide through the air. Bloom took on this challenge in hopes of inspiring others to get outside of their comfort zones and experience life.
Steve-O recently obtained his skydiving USPA ‘A’ license at Music City Skydiving, accomplishing all 25 required jumps in just FOUR days in order to prepare for a stunt and promote his ‘Super Dummy Tour’ taking off this Fall. The 50-year-old Jackass alum was apparently inspired by Tony Hawk and Tom Cruise.
Johnny Knoxville, also of Jackass fame, set out to achieve his skydiving license back in 2012. He completed his Accelerated Freefall (AFF) jumps, but didn’t go on to receive his official ‘A’ license due to the skydiving scene being written out of the show’s script!
It’s well known that Tom Cruise is a legend when it comes to performing his own movie stunts like in Mission Impossible: Fallout. Cruise made over 100 training skydives in preparation for the nighttime HALO jumps being done over Dubai. And he did over 500 training jumps to prepare for Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part I – where Cruise chases a train on a motorbike, flies off of a jump and transitions into a mind-blowing BASE jump to chase down the train and parachute onto one of the cars!!
How many times has Tom Cruise skydived? It’s hard to know how many jumps he’s logged, but we for sure know it’s well over 600! Cruise is a real-life adrenaline junkie who has even gotten other celebrities to jump with him, including James Corden!
Patrick Swayze passed away in 2009 but his spirit lives on, especially within the skydiving community. Swayze and the famous movie Point Break brought skydiving to life for a generation and inspired countless people to make a tandem skydive and take up the sport.
Did they really skydive in Point Break? Heck yeah, they did! Most of the jumps were real except for the famous multi-minute jump that’s not exactly accurate. Even still, Swayze was a legit skydiver who would even jump in his spare time for funsies.
If you missed the high-altitude balloon stunt, Ascension with the famous magician David Blane, you may want to check it out. His YouTube video has generated over 22 million views! To us, what was more impressive was the preparation for the stunt. Blaine made over 500 skydives in 14 months – jumping as many as 15 times per day – to gain the license needed for him to make Ascension happen.
Running Wild with Bear Grylls is a show where celebrities do outrageous things with famous adventurer Bear Grylls. Celebrities climb boulders, do Navy SEAL-style training, and yes, skydive all by themselves. Many celebrities have been on the show but a few stand out to us – the ones that actually did a solo skydive!
Channing Tatum has been on the show TWICE. He is seen jumping from a helicopter from 5,000 feet, known as a “hop n pop” in the skydiving community. He has also done a tandem skydive with the Golden Knights – the United States Army’s very prominent parachute team.
Zac Efron performed a low-altitude solo skydive from a helicopter alongside Grylls too. He prepared for the show by practicing solo jumps at Skydive Perris, a dropzone located near Hollywood known for hosting many celebrities who skydive and stunt work.
Michelle Rodriguez is also another one who has been on the show and performed an impressive solo jump from an airplane at 10,000 feet in altitude. She’s done numerous tandems as well, including this one at Skydive Dubai. It’s no surprise that the Fast & Furious star is into skydiving. Rodriguez is known for playing tough, fearless characters, and she carries that same bold attitude into her real life.
George H.W. Bush’s skydiving career began in 1997 at the age of 72 years old! He embarked on the endeavor in an attempt to bring some closure after experiencing his first parachute jump as a bailout from his torpedo bomber off the coast of Chichi Jima in 1944. Sadly, his two crewmen did not survive. He made an AFF jump with the USPA Director of Safety & Training Glenn Bangs and Army Golden Knight Andy Serrano. President Bush would go on to make another AFF jump along with several tandem skydives – one even on his 90th birthday! He was awarded the honorary expert license D-20000 and his military Airborne Jump Wings.
You may have already seen the popular video of Will Smith beautifully speaking about his experience when he went tandem skydiving in Dubai in 2014 with his wife Jada Pinkett Smith. They had such a great time that they ended up bringing their sons just a couple of weeks later.
Miley Cyrus is another star who joined the ranks of famous skydivers when she made a tandem skydive. She had an absolute blast, sticking her tongue out and smiling all the way down exclaiming she was “finally a bird!”
Kendall Jenner and Scott Disick took on skydiving together on the popular TV show, Keeping Up With the Kardashians. Disick went right for it whereas Jenner was a bit more hesitant. Even still, the supermodel went for it and smiled the whole way down!
Liam Hemsworth performed a tandem skydive back in 2014 as a feature for Nylon magazine and apparently loved the experience! As one of the main stars in The Hunger Games, it’s no surprise that he is up for an adrenaline-packed challenge.
And the list goes on! Skydiving is a unique experience that brings people from all walks of life closer together – even “untouchable” celebs. Are you ready to share a common interest with one of these celebrities? Book a skydive now with Skydive Orange! Blue skies.
